Nokia
Marketing Brochure

Nokia approached us to design the world-wide marketing brochures for their new Prism Collection — a range of fashion-led mobile phones with a strong geometric design. The brief was in part to communicate the opportunity the user has to customise their phone with clip-on colour bands, coloured lights and screen savers.

After researching the influences and references that the phone designers had incorporated such as geometric and symmetrical architecture, triangular and faceted jewel-like motifs, flouro colour palette and glossy materials, we decided to shoot the phones in a triangular set built from mirrors. Anything placed in this set it is reflected infinite times in triangular formations. We used props that described the design ethos behind the phone such as coiled telephone cables, drawing tools, 3D triangular structures that referenced the shapes of the keypads and screensavers, lasers and strip lights. We wanted the shoot to be as honest as possible and celebrated how the low-fi looking props became slick and beautiful when placed within the reflective set.

The brochure has been laid out as a busy jumble of photographs that biscect each other like shards of glass. One photograph flows into another by lining up elements in each image. The whole brochure was laid out as one long strip. We french folded the pages to enhance this wrap-around image effect and printed the reverse of each sheet a solid colour taken from the phone’s colour palette. Using an oversize page dimension of 230x330mm we could print supersize images of the phones alongside more abstracted shots which become almost patterns. We liked how this plays with the reader’s expectations of scale of the product. The centre spread of the brochure is folded like a pop-up book along the angular lines of the phone that fills the spread. Keywords that describe the phone’s design evolution were made from hand cut and folded paper. These were photographed and overlaid on the geometric images to increase the level of 3-dimensionality.

The brochures are printed on super glossy card weight stock and bound with electric blue binding tape creating a very tactile experience for the user.
